On January 12, 2016, a clinical expert team from Hoag Orthopedic Institute offered an educational offering on Osteoporosis to the community at the Florence Sylvester Memorial Senior Center in Laguna Hills, CA. Over 50 attendees participated in this event and were thrilled with the content covered. The lecture began with an overview of osteoporosis, risk factors for osteopenia and osteoporosis, and life style changes to incorporate to prevent osteoporosis. This content was taught by Marisa R. Swain, MSN, RN, ACNS-BC, ONC, a Clinical Nurse Specialist from HOI. Next, the group learned about dietary sources for bone health from HOI Registered Dietitian Reema Kanda, RD. Reema shared delicious steamed edamame soy beans which quickly became a crowd favorite as a good source for calcium and protein. Lastly, the participants got moving with Now Nguyen-Le, PT, a physical therapist from HOI. Now demonstrated safe weight bearing exercises to help make bones and muscles stronger. The group enjoyed the material covered and the helpful dietary and exercise tips offered during the class.
