IRVINE, Calif. (January 22, 2019) – Hoag Orthopedic Institute (HOI), one of the largest providers of orthopedic care in the nation, has announced it has entered into a partnership with Costa Mesa, California-based ProSport Physical Therapy & Performance (ProSport), which operates three physical therapy and performance centers in Orange County and one in Los Angeles, and provides rehabilitation services for thousands of patients each year.
As part of the partnership agreement, HOI will be making an equity investment and assuming a board position in ProSport in its quest to provide highly-coordinated orthopedic care for its patients. HOI officials said that this investment is an important step in expanding its comprehensive sports medicine care as, together with ProSport, the organizations will collectively be caring for many professional and semi-professional Orange County athletes. With a medical staff of 300 physicians and more than 80 orthopedic specialists, Irvine, California-based HOI is California’s largest provider of joint replacement surgery and is the official medical partner for the Los Angeles Chargers. HOI is comprised of an inpatient hospital in Irvine and three ambulatory care surgery centers in Orange, Mission Viejo and Newport Beach, CA.
“We are delighted to partner with ProSport who, like HOI, is well known in the community for superior outcomes in their comprehensive rehabilitation services for all patients, including professional and top-performing athletes,” Jennifer Mitzner, chief executive officer of HOI. “Physical therapy is an essential component of the continuum of care for the orthopedic patient that it made sense to partner with a like-minded rehabilitation provider to further expand our seamless approach to musculoskeletal patient care and performance services. By improving care coordination between the surgical experience and rehabilitation, orthopedic patients can return more quickly to sport, work and life.”
HOI chose to partner with ProSport to collaborate on future musculoskeletal population health programs and create a more coordinated and integrated care model from surgery to outpatient physical therapy and beyond. “HOI has been a national thought leader and innovator in the delivery of value-based care for our surgical patients,” added Mitzner. “Now, we can expand our value-based model to a larger footprint of musculoskeletal non-surgical care, offering more value and options to our patients.”
“After 27 years of uncompromising efforts to build ProSport into the leading physical therapy and sports performance brand in southern California, we are thrilled to enter into this partnership with Hoag Orthopedic Institute,” said Joe Donohue, P.T., chief executive officer and founder of ProSport. “We are both honored and excited to be recognized by HOI and to partner with it on services for its patients.”
ProSport currently operates three 10,000 square-foot physical therapy facilities in Orange County, including Costa Mesa, Laguna Hills and Rancho Santa Margarita. In addition, it also operates a facility in Rancho Palos Verdes. ProSport says it has been providing performance training and physical therapy to more professional athletes than any other Orange County facility.
