On Friday, June 7, 2024, Hoag Orthopedic Institute (HOI) hosted the second annual Sports Medicine Conference at Chapman University. This one-day event brought together 150 athletic trainers and physical therapists for a day of continuing education and multidisciplinary collaboration.
The conference featured a diverse range of topics crucial to the field of sports medicine. Attendees delved into discussions on opioids in orthopedics and sports, foot and ankle injuries, cervical and lumbar spine injuries in athletics.
Included in the conference were several small group breakout sessions, fostering hands-on learning and interactive discussions. These sessions covered a variety of topics, including manual therapy techniques, heat illness management, physician-led case studies, vestibular concussion rehabilitation, and joint reductions. These intimate settings allowed for in-depth exploration of each subject, promoting active participation and knowledge sharing among attendees.
“This conference provided valuable insights into the latest research and treatment methodologies, and our goal is that participants leave equipped with knowledge to enhance their practice and support their athletes as well,” shared HOI Division Chief of Sports Medicine and orthopedic sports medicine surgeon David Gazzaniga, MD
Physicians from Hoag Orthopedic Institute, including Dr. Gazzaniga, Dr. Brandon Haghverdian, Dr. Nick Jain, Dr. Russell Petrie, Dr. Hafiz Kassam, and Dr. Mark Hambly led many of the breakout and main sessions. Their expertise and insights were invaluable, providing attendees with a wealth of information and practical advice.
The day concluded with a dynamic speaker panel, where attendees had the opportunity to submit their own questions. This interactive session fostered a lively exchange of ideas and allowed participants to gain further clarity on topics of interest.
In addition to the educational sessions, the conference provided ample networking opportunities. Attendees connected with peers and industry professionals during lunch and a reception at the end of the day. These interactions facilitated the exchange of ideas and the establishment of valuable professional relationships.
We look forward to continuing to expand the HOI Sports Medicine Conference in 2025 with the latest in healthcare and sports medicine topics.
