Wearing the right shoes, whether at a concert or in daily life, can make a huge difference in preventing backache and foot and ankle problems. We spoke with HOI-affiliated orthopedic surgeon Brandon Haghverdian, MD, who specializes in foot and ankle surgery, to get his take on the importance of selecting the right footwear to minimize foot and ankle pain during concert season.
Q: Concerts can be a marathon, with hours of standing and dancing. From a foot health perspective, what’s the most important thing to look for in concert footwear to avoid pain or injury?
A: Attending a concert is always fun and exciting, but it can also take a toll on your feet! While finding comfortable footwear for everyday life can be a challenge, choosing the right shoes for an event where you’ll be standing and moving for hours is even more important. Taking the time to invest in shoes that fit well and offer proper support can make all the difference, helping you avoid days or even weeks of discomfort afterward.
Q: We’ve all been guilty of wearing stylish but uncomfortable shoes to a concert. How does wearing the wrong footwear impact not just our feet, but our entire body alignment?
A: I often say that everything starts with our feet. The impact of walking, running, dancing—really any movement—carries through from the ground up, affecting not only our feet but also our knees, hips, and lower back. Wearing the wrong footwear can throw off your natural walking pattern and standing alignment, leading to discomfort and potential strain throughout your entire body. It’s essential to choose shoes that not only feel comfortable but also support proper posture and movement.
Q: Are there any specific shoe types or features you would recommend for concertgoers who will be standing for long periods, and why?
A: The best shoes for concertgoers who will be standing for long periods are those with a stiff sole and a curved 'rocker' bottom. A stiff sole helps absorb the impact of walking, transferring the ground reaction forces away from your foot, which can prevent unnecessary strain. Contrary to popular belief, flexible shoes aren’t the best option for long periods of standing. Flexibility can lead to discomfort, as it doesn’t provide the support your foot needs. That said, a stiff shoe can still be well-cushioned for added comfort. It’s also important to choose shoes with a wide toe box, allowing ample space for your toes to move. Brands like Hoka, Brooks, and New Balance often meet these criteria, but the key is to find a shoe that fits well and supports your feet properly—regardless of brand.
Q: Comfortable shoes are key to preventing foot fatigue, but what about the toe and arch health? Are there any specific shoe designs or insoles that can provide extra support during a concert?
A: While having a well-constructed shoe with the right shape and structure is important, the most critical factor is ensuring a proper fit. A well-made shoe that’s the wrong size is a recipe for discomfort. Although shopping online is convenient, it’s worth taking the time to visit a store and try on several sizes from the same brand to determine which one fits best. Once you find the right size, you can confidently order future pairs online.
In addition to a well-fitting shoe, arch support insoles can significantly improve balance and overall foot function. There is a wide variety of orthotics available, each designed to address specific foot shapes and postures. For personalized advice, it’s a good idea to consult with an orthopedic foot and ankle specialist to determine if orthotics would benefit you and, if so, which type would be most suitable.
Q: We all want to look stylish while enjoying a concert, but we don’t want to regret our footwear choice the next day. Can you share some tips on striking the balance between fashion and function when it comes to concert shoes?"
A: It’s completely natural to want to look your best and make a statement with your clothing and footwear! However, you don’t have to sacrifice style for comfort. Many reputable shoe brands now offer trendy designs and a variety of colors, so you can enjoy both fashion and foot health. What's even more encouraging is how widely accepted comfortable shoes have become in modern fashion. Next time you're out at the mall, take a look around—you might be surprised by how many people are wearing stylish yet sensible footwear! Of course, if you wear comfortable, sensible shoes the majority of the time, it might be okay to make a small exception for that 1% of the time when you want to prioritize style over comfort.
Overall, selecting the right footwear to minimize your health during a concert may mean choosing support over style, but your back and feet will thank you. If you have pre-existing foot conditions, it is especially important to choose the right footwear. Shoes that support your body’s natural alignment can help avoid straining your lower back and legs.
