Preventing Injury During Lacrosse Season

HOI sports medicine surgeon Robert Grumet, MD specializes in shoulder and knee surgery and supports various youth athletes and teams throughout Southern California. We spoke with Dr. Grumet to get his insight into lacrosse injuries and how to prevent them.

Q. What are some of the most common injuries lacrosse players face?

I'm often asked a lot about injuries as it relates to this high -energy sport of lacrosse. A lot of times, actually, we talk to students about staying hydrated, making sure that they're drinking liquids either during and after their practices or their games.

Q. How important is stretching before lacrosse games or practice?

We often talk about making sure you're stretching before and after games and practices, keeping those muscles stretched out, preventing hamstring and quad strains as much as we can.

Q. How important is cross training?

We often also talk about as important as it is things like cross training. We live in this beautiful area of Southern California. We have the opportunity to play year-round. Year-round sports obviously translates to things like overuse injuries. In order to help reduce that risk, we talk about cross training. So, you know, in addition to your lacrosse, doing things that are outside of that, such as biking, swimming, activities that would engage these same muscle groups just in different ways to help prevent further injury.
