“ I knew I’d come to the right place,” says Richard. “It’s been two months since my surgery, and I’m astounded about how good I feel.”
Executive Richard Van Dyke, who has enjoyed numerous 100-mile century rides with his cycling club, could no longer bend over and tie his own shoe. Hip osteoarthritis and related severe hip impingement plaguing the 61-year-old local business owner became progressively worse. Over a two-year period, what began as occasional, intermittent pain turned into a daily challenge. He found himself trying not to limp down the hallways at work and struggling to get out of a chair. His favorite pastimes of skiing, cycling and travel became too painful to enjoy.
Consistent gym workouts three times a week were becoming more difficult with limited range of motion. Deep tissue massages helped a little, temporarily. After researching treatment options and talking with friends who had excellent results with implants, Richard went to see an HOI orthopedic surgeon who specialized in the anterior approach for hip replacement.
“I knew I’d come to the right place,” says Richard. “It’s been two months since my surgery, and I’m astounded about how good I feel.”
Richard calls his outpatient procedure, performed on HOI’s Hana surgical table, as a “great, positive experience from start to finish.” He explains, “ They helped set my expectations in a pre-op class, where they taught me safe movements to do while my hip stabilized – everyday activities like climbing stairs and getting in and out of a bed and a car. Staff tested me on those movements a few hours after my 7:30 a.m. surgery, and I went home by 6:30 p.m. – without any pain.”
The day after his procedure Richard was back on his computer, working remotely, sans pain medication. A physical therapist came to his home every other day for the next two weeks. “She gave me great tips on how to regain my range of motion and come back strong,” he says. “I was back to work in two weeks. Even the insurance process has been seamless.”
Richard adds, “My wife, who is a retired nurse, and I were extraordinarily impressed with the care I received from beginning to end. From a business perspective, I know my successful outcome is due to their quality of personnel and solid processes.”
