Hoag Orthopedics Announces New Fellows For 2024-2025

Hoag Orthopedics, Hoag Orthopedic Institute (HOI)’s non-profit organization dedicated to education and research, has announced five new fellows for the 2024-2025 academic year. The fellows will be completing the fellowship program in arthroplasty, orthopedic spine surgery or orthopedic sports medicine.

Founded by the physicians of HOI, Hoag Orthopedics is committed to fostering impactful research and educational initiatives aimed at enhancing the quality of healthcare within the community.

“Hoag Orthopedic Institute is thrilled to welcome its new fellows to the team this year,” said Steven L. Barnett, M.D., chief medical officer of Hoag Orthopedic Institute. “Their dedication to advancing the field of orthopedics and commitment to patient care aligns perfectly with our mission and we look forward to supporting their growth as they embark on this important journey.”

The 2024-2025 Hoag Orthopedic Institute fellows are:

Arthroplasty:

  • John “Pat” Connors, MD – Dr. Connors is a native of Southern California, born in Orange, and was raised between Irvine and Wellesley, Massachusetts. He obtained his undergraduate degree in biology from the University of Notre Dame, followed by his medical degree from the State University of New York, Brooklyn. He completed his Orthopedic Surgery residency at the University of Connecticut and is excited to return to his Southern California roots to complete his training. Outside of work, you can find him with his wife Amanda and dog Henry, traveling, running, or soaking up the sunshine at the beach.
  • Clark Dorman, MD – Dr. Dorman is a native Texan, born and raised in Lufkin, Texas. He completed his undergraduate studies at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas. He then moved to Houston where he attended The University of Texas Medical School at Houston. He stayed in Houston for his orthopedic surgery residency at UT Houston. In his free time, he enjoys spending time and traveling with his wife, hunting, fishing, and golfing.

Orthopedic Sports Medicine:

  • Patrick Saunders, MD– Dr. Saunders grew up in Gilford, New Hampshire in the White Mountains of New England. He attended Princeton University where he played basketball, and then went on to attend medical school at the University of Vermont. Dr. Saunders then moved to Phoenix, Arizona where he completed his Orthopaedic Residency at the University of Arizona College of Medicine-Phoenix. During his free time, he enjoys playing basketball, road cycling and mountain biking, and spending time with his wife Keeley and their daughter Chase.
  • Abhay Mathur, MD – Dr. Mathur was born in Honolulu, Hawaii before moving to and growing up in Holland, Michigan. He completed his undergraduate degree in neuroscience and biological anthropology at the University of Michigan. From there, he spent some time working as an EMT before attending medical school at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. He then moved to Washington, D.C. and completed his orthopaedic residency at George Washington University. Other than work, he enjoys traveling, trying new restaurants, and exploring outside with his wife, Rafeya.

Orthopedic Spine Surgery:

  • Casey Slattery, MD – Dr. Slattery grew up in Gillette, Wyoming where his family still resides. Prior to college, he spent several years competing in junior hockey around the country and working as a welder for local coal mines back home. He then returned to school and attended the University of Denver for his undergraduate studies before moving to Seattle for his medical degree at the University of Washington. Orthopedic surgery residency brought him to Albuquerque and was completed at the University of New Mexico. During his free time, he lives an active life filled with fitness, golf, hockey, sand volleyball, and most recently learning to surf and scuba dive.
